After our short stay in Pisac we travelled by road down the Sacred Valley. Our next stop was Chinchero, a plateau to one side of the Sacred Valley. There is a long way round by road but we took the shortcut: hiking up 800 metres to the Inca ruins of Chinchero.
It was very tough but not as tough as the Inca Trail will be. The worst part was having hiked to the ruins, realising that the town proper was at the top and we were at the bottom of an extra Incan staircase.
We stayed with a Chinchero family who farm and weave textiles for a living (and feed tired tourists). It was a beautiful home and we ate hearty meals with lots of potatoes. Because of the elevation the climate is quite different and the fields are full of barley, beans and potatoes.
The next day was a 30 k bike ride but I bailed out as I was a bit lightheaded. The rest made a better show of things but many in the group had to bow out because of tiredness, heat oir bruises.
Now at Ollantaytambo, the usual starting point of the trek to Machu Picchu.
